35. Packers 26, Bears 7 (2006)

Chicago already had locked up homefield advantage in the playoffs, coming in at 13-2. Green Bay had won three in a row to climb to 7-8 overall. The Bears would eventually make the trip to the Super Bowl a little more than a month later. However, if you are the Bears, you never want to be embarrassed on your home field against your fiercest rivals, even if the game is meaningless. That is just what happened. Green Bay scored the game’s first 23 points en route to a dominating 26-7 win at Soldier Field.

The two teams met in the season opener at Lambeau Field and the Packers failed to score a single point in a 26-0 loss. This time around, Green Bay wasted little time scoring its first points of the season against Chicago. The Packers came out on the opening drive and used a Brett Favre to Carlyle Holiday pass of 35 yards to go down and draw first blood. The touchdown was a Favre pass to Donald Driver and the Packers had a 7-0 lead.

It would stay that way until late in the first quarter when Favre was picked off by Nathan Vasher and the Bears took over at their own 35. But five plays after that, Chicago was facing a third and short. Grossman looked and threw short to the left intended for tight end Desmond Clark, but it was picked off by Nick Collins, who took it back 45 yards for the score. It would be the first of two pick sixes in the game by the Packers defense. This one gave the Packers a 13-0 lead after the extra point was missed.

Late in the half, following a Packers field goal, Green Bay added its second pick six. This time it was Patrick Dendy getting the score, picking it off over the middle and returning it to the house. The Packers held a 23-0 lead at halftime.

Nothing of note really happened in the second half. Chicago, basically waving the white flag, decided to turn to Brian Griese in the second half. The former Michigan quarterback did throw Chicago’s only touchdown of the day, a 75-yard pass to Mark Bradley, to cut it to 23-7.

The Packers sealed the game in the fourth with a field goal to push it back to a three score game and the game finished 26-7.

Despite missing the playoffs for the second consecutive season, the momentum from the final stretch of this season carried over to the 2007 season, as the Packers went 13-3 and advanced to the NFC Championship game.
